IASIS acronym stands for Ioannina Architectural & Societal Infrastructure Stratification
The term IASIS, implying the concept of treatment/rehabilitation, constitutes an indirect reference both to the material as well as to the mental/emotional/psychological dimension of the procedure, attaching thus equal significance to tangible and intangible cultural heritage.
Quoting the etymology of the word, IASIS, originally it is an ancient Greek word, meaning the "cure" and preserves the same spelling (i.e., ΙΑΣΙΣ in Greek, easy to be read even by a non-speaking-Greek person) as well as the same sounding/pronunciation in both languages.

Deconstructing the acronym IASIS
Ioannina stands for the specific town, point of interest of the project.
Architectural defines the architectural aspect dominating the project.
Societal adds the societal aspect as this is declared/reflected/clarified/implied by the architecture.
Infrastructure implies "the infrastructure" in the context of the literal meaning of the word: the sub-structures that run through/interconnect architectural & social structures, thus leading to the point that architecture & society are considered as a "mosaic" consisting of multiple elements.
Stratification is the result to which all the above-mentioned lead, i.e., the stratification of architectural and social "expressions". We adopt the term “stratification”, in order to imply the temporal succession, as well as the metaphorical concept of stratigraphy with regard to building evidence/relics. By the term "architectural" a variety of architectural features that can be categorized by architectural and/or social criteria is implied, while by the term "social", a reference is made to various social groups within a wider multicultural environment.
